Timber Frame Origins
Somewhere between 200 and 500 BC a new type of construction began. It was the joining of two usually large pieces of timber with a joint known as the Mortise and Tenon. This type of joinery prevailed for centuries in all aspects of construction. It was not only used for its strength, but also for its aesthetic beauty. Along came the Victorian era, bringing with it new developments in technology such as the circular saw mill, and the iron nail. The world’s population was increasing fast, and a new type of construction had to keep up. Hence the introduction of stud framing, or balloon framing. By the later 1800’s, most of the worlds Timber Frame buildings were torn down, and the art was almost lost forever.
Timber Frame Revival
In the 1970’s a revival of Timber Frame structures began with a few wood craftsmen in Europe and North America. The interest in Timber Frame homes has increased considerably in the past several years. Timber Framing is an alternative to horizontally stacked logs and in many cases can be more practical. Timber Frame homes can have virtually any type of exterior finish (stone, brick, siding, etc.). These homes also look natural in a rural or urban setting.
